Team Nasamax also realised a world's
first through the successful deployment in a racing car of a nitrogen-based
fire safety device specifically for the fuel tank.
NBS™, developed by our technical partner
ASTEK, creates a low oxygen environment inside the fuel
tank as the fuel is used and renders the gases within the
tank
unignitable.
The system proved its worth during the 2003 Le Mans 24 Hour race when after 16 hours
of running the engine exploded causing severe damage to
the engine fuel system. The resulting fire was intense
but with the ASTEK NBS™ fire protection system employed on the vehicle the fuel tank was not involved and was in fact undamaged. |
